Sliding-Scale Prices:
Here’s how they work
Unirondack maintains an ongoing commitment to economic accessibility. One of the ways we do this is by using a sliding-scale price model for all of our programs, spring, summer, or fall. This allows families to self-select from several different price tiers based on their current economic position. The camp experience is exactly the same, no matter which price tier you choose.
Price tiers for summer youth sessions:
Tier 1 - $900 - This price is approximately 70% of the actual break-even cost for one camper for one week, including food, materials, utilities, fair pay for our staff, and upkeep of buildings and grounds.
Tier 2 - $1,050 - This price is approximately 80% of the actual break-even cost for one camper for one week, including food, materials, utilities, fair pay for our staff, and upkeep of buildings and grounds.
Tier 3 - $1,200 - This price approximately 92% break-even cost for one camper for one week, including food, materials, utilities, fair pay for our staff, and upkeep of buildings and grounds.
Tier 4 - $1,400 - This price is the approximate break-even cost for one camper for one week, plus a $100 donation that will go directly toward helping campers who cannot otherwise afford to come to camp.
Tier 5 - $1,800 - This price will cover the cost of your camper, and sponsor another camper to come to camp for free. If you are able to make this contribution, we urge you to please consider. This can make a life-changing difference in a young person’s life, and will also contribute toward the long-term well-being of Unirondack as an organization.
How Do I Choose the Right Tier?
You can choose whichever tier works best for you - however you may want to use the guide below to help you make your decision.
Consider selecting Tier 4 or Tier 5 if some or all of the following statements apply to you:
I am comfortably able to meet all of my basic needs like housing, food, clothing and transportation
I do not have significant debt, or I am able to easily make regular payments on my debt
I own a home or my rent is less than I can actually afford
I own or lease a car that is less than 5 years old or is under warranty
I am employed at a job with benefits or I do not need to work to meet my needs
I have reliable access to healthcare
I have savings, retirement funds, and/or investments
I am able to buy everything I need new, rather than second-hand (even if I choose not to)
I have expendable income I can use for entertainment and/or items that bring me joy
I can afford to travel recreationally once a year or more, if I choose
Consider selecting Tier 3 if some or all of the following statements apply to you:
I may experience some financial strain, but I am always able to meet my basic needs (food, housing, clothing, transportation etc.) and usually have something left over
I may have some debt but it does not prevent me from meeting my needs
I own a home or can comfortably afford rent on a home that meets my needs
I own or lease a car that is in good working condition
I am consistently employed and have a job with benefits
I have access to health care
I have some savings or a retirement fund
I have some expendable income for entertainment and/or items that bring me joy
I am able to buy most things new
I can afford to travel recreationally once a year, if I choose
Consider selecting Tier 2 if some or all of the following statements apply to you:
I have some stress about money but I am usually able to meet my basic needs (food, housing, clothing, transportation etc.)
I have debt but I am able to make most payments and it does not prevent me from meeting my basic needs
I own or rent a home but housing often presents a financial strain
I own or lease an older vehicle that is not always reliable
I am consistently employed
I have access to healthcare, but medical bills may cause financial stress
I have some savings for emergencies
I often have some expendable income for entertainment and/or items that bring me joy
I buy some items new, and others second-hand
I can afford to travel recreationally once every few years
Consider selecting Tier 1 if some or all of the following statements apply to you:
I frequently stress about meeting basic needs (food, housing, clothing, transportation etc.)
I have debt and it sometimes prevents me from meeting my needs
I rent a home and it is a financial strain, or I have unstable housing
I rely on public transportation or own an older vehicle and struggle to pay for gas and/or car repairs
I am unemployed or underemployed
I am worried about getting sick or injured because I may not be able to access healthcare
I have no savings
Most months I live paycheck to paycheck with little or no expendable income after the bills are paid
I rarely buy new items because I can’t afford them
I cannot afford to travel or take time off without financial burden
If Tier 1 is out of reach for you financially, you can apply for a campership! Find out more on our camperships and discounts page:
Price tiers for adult & inter-generational programs in the spring & fall:
Sliding-scale prices work a little differently for our spring and fall programs, because they vary a bit in length, age range, and focus. Though, just like with our summer prices, you will have the same camp experience as anyone else attending your event, regardless of which price tier you choose.
Some of our weekend and week-long programs will have price tiers that are a bit lower than those listed here. These slightly lower-cost versions of the price tiers are for programs with a smaller capacity, narrower age range, or more specific event focus. Check the individual event pages for specific prices for each program.
Remember, if Tier 1 is out of reach for you financially, you can apply for a campership! Financial aid can be applied to any Unirondack program. Learn more by clicking the purple button above.
It should be noted that the only Unirondack events which do not follow a sliding-scale pricing model are our Work Weekends and Work Weeks. Since attendees for these events are signing up to help out with maintenance and labor, these events are considered a kind of work exchange, and the registration fee is only used to cover the cost of food for the group.
